Our sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses. So when our founder, Emily, started The Rustic House candle company, she knew exactly what she wanted as her first scent. All based on a powerful memory.
As a teenager, Emily’s father purchased a special gift for her after her mother’s death. As a father trying to connect in a difficult time, Emily's dad knew she had always been inspired by scent and purchased her a luxurious bottle of perfume. She fell in love with the scent and knew it was special. So special, in fact, Emily only wore it for special occasions over the next decade. The scent was incredibly distinct, and when people caught the fragrance, they would say, “You smell wonderful. What is that?”
After so many years, she was tired of waiting for a fancy occasion to smell something that made her so happy. So, Emily met with chemists and trained perfumers. She handed them a sample of the perfume her father gave her years before and said, “I want a candle that smells like this.” From there, The Rustic House Signature Scent was brought to life.
Emily's Signature Scent became, and has remained, our number one best selling scent since its introduction in 2013. And like any exquisite food or drink, Signature Scent has complexity and depth. With notes of amber, tobacco, lavender and bergamot orange, it makes any space, lavish or unadorned, feel comforting and happy.
